Bartlett collected these incised bamboo sticks and bark in 1918 and 1927 in Asahan, a part of the Batak country in Sumatra, where very little of the old Batak culture remains. The great majority of the inscriptions were written by a few informants at Bartlett's request. The inscriptions include traditional writing- and reading-manuals, short poems, letters, and incantations for magic.
